The Rockstar Guitar Tuning Method

Hey Rockstars!

Today we’re going to talk about tuning your guitar and KEEPING IT IN TUNE!

I know, this isn’t the most exciting topic, but trust me, there is NOTHING worse than practicing and playing an out of tune guitar.

So this is really the starting point for your practice and playing sessions.

PREFACE

I should start by telling you that there are some extra accessories, cool gadgets, and maintenance tips that will help you keep your guitar in tune (ie. using thicker strings, buying locking tuners, tightening the screw at the top of the machine heads, using a pencil to scribble in graphite into the nut, etc.)…

…but today’s post will focus on what you can do when you’re actually tuning your guitar. I will write a future post on the additional methods I mentioned above.

ROCKSTAR TUNING METHOD

First and foremost, every practice or playing session should start with tuning the guitar.

In a way, this is kind of like tuning your mind as well to prepare it for MAXIMUM absorption of whatever material you’ll be working on that day. Not to mention preparing your ears for pleasant sounding music (rather than the out of tune nightmare I was describing earlier).

So why is it so important that you tune your guitar before a practice/playing session?

Well, besides the fact that you know you’re supposed to tune your guitar (and the fact that I’ve already mentioned it about 100 times in this post alone), the most important reason to tune is that an in-tune guitar allows you to focus on the things YOU can control – learning the information, applying the information to your guitar, playing effortlessly – without worrying about and being distracted by external factors like the equipment not being set up right.

There is nothing more annoying than losing momentum in a practice session and/or being in the middle of a playing situation (ie. a performance) and knowing your guitar is out of tune.

What is the goal of the Rockstar Tuning Method?

This tuning method is all about keeping your guitar in tune, by “locking” the string in tune while your tuning it. We achieve this by focusing on always TIGHTENING THE STRING to the target note.

It’s really as simple as that, however, most players don’t really understand how to do this both accurately and quickly (you don’t want to spend your whole practice session/performance tuning your guitar).

So that bring us to the Rockstar Practice Method.

How does the Rockstar Tuning Method work?

Well, I think I sold you on why it’s so important to tune your guitar. Now I’d like to show you the method in action (plus a cool “thumb trick” that save you a bunch of time when tuning).
